Gorenje handball players are 2012/13 national champions

On May 24 the final game of the Slovenian handball national championship was played at the Red Arena in Velenje. Gorenje Velenje handball players defeated HC Celje Pivovarna Laško to prove they are the best in Slovenia for the second year in a row. This is HC Gorenje Velenje's third national championship title, and the second in a row. The team only lost twice in the national championship this season and they clinched the title a game before the end. Gorenje proudly congratulates the 2012/13 national champions.

A win to wrap up the season

Gorenje Velenje handball players clinched their third national championship title before the last match day. However, pride and prestige are always at stake when playing against a major rival such as HC Celje Pivovarna Laško. Gorenje defeated the second best team in the nation for the fourth time this season. The fans honoured the players with standing ovations during the dying minutes of the final game. At the trophy ceremony the Handball Association of Slovenia also announced the best player and the best goalkeeper of the league as voted by the club coaches. The honours went to the Gorenje Velenje team captain Marko Bezjak, and the goalkeeper Ivan Gajić.

On the path of changes

The Slovenian title means that Gorenje Velenje has secured their place in the next instalment of the European Champions League. However, the club is about to see major changes in personnel: including the coach, replacement will have to be found for nine team members. Leaving the club are the players Matej Gaber, Jure Dolenec, Marko Bezjak, Fahrudin Melić, Dino Bajram, Ivan Gajić, Peter Pucelj, and David Miklavčič. There was a touch of nostalgia in the parting words of the coach Branko Tamše: "I have said goodbye to this club as a player; now, I am leaving as a coach. And I am leaving the best team in the country. I am proud of this." He will be succeeded by Ivan Vajdl.

New club anthem – Black and Yellow, Together as One

The club has long wanted an anthem. At the end of the season, their wish came true and the song was officially introduced to the fans at the party following the end of the season. The club announced the anthem would be with the Gorenje players at every step. The lyrics and music for the anthem titled "Black and Yellow, Together as One" are the work of the local Velenje-based rock band Big Addition whose members played it live in front of the Red Arena during the end-of-season party.
